The staff of the project entitled “Innovative Beef Value Chain Development Schemes in Southern Africa” met on November 26 and 27 in Manzini for a workshop on Outcome Mapping, the monitoring and Evaluation approach used for this project.
Outcome mapping is a methodology for planning, monitoring and evaluating targeted behaviors, actions and relationships within a project’s sphere of influence, and for learning how to increase effectiveness in relation to the project’s ultimate goals.
Apart from project staff, participants included the main stakeholders in the project: fatteners, traders, a representative of the Swaziland Farmers Union (SNAU) Micro Finance Unit (in charge of developing the financial instrument to be used in the project), the Swaziland Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (SWADE) and the University of Swaziland.
After a detailed presentation on the project, the basic concepts on outcome mapping were introduced. The group then progressed into developing a vision and a mission statement that clearly outlined what behavioral changes and different interactions we would like to see in the persons or groups we work with.
There were good discussions and partners seemed interested and appreciated that they were included in the process. Follow up actions will include meetings with this same group of persons every 4 to 6 months to assess progress made.
